Registration is a complete hassle to do by yourself, especially for a salvaged vehicle.

With this process, you’ll get a registration in your hands without going to the DMV…

Calling the DMV…

Doing any inspections or emissions tests…

Or anything else besides filling out the step-by-step questionnaire we send you and notarizing a document or two.

Before you get started, here are some things you need to know:

tire track

registration and South Dakota plates

What you’ll get:

You’ll the following from South Dakota: A Registration, Salvage title, and 2 license plates, a front and rear. If you don’t live in a state that requires 2 plates, you can run the rear plates only, but it’s best to run both just to be safe.

To qualify for this, you’ll need a title that’s properly signed over to you or already in your name. If the title is not signed over to you, we’ll need a complete chain of ownership showing how you acquired the vehicle.

out of state registration in South Dakota

"How can I get an out-of-state registration without being a resident?"

Simple.

South Dakota doesn’t have in-state residency requirements to get registered. In other words, you don’t have to live in South Dakota to register and get plates there. You can drive in other states with South Dakota plates and no one bats an eye – not even South Dakota.

Here are the documents to have ready:

(1) ID/Passport/Drivers License (Copy)

(2) Social Security Card, 1099, W2, 1098, or Pay Stub
with full social security number displayed. (Copy)

(3) Salvage Title (cannot be a Salvage CERTIFICATE)

(4) Sales Tax or Proof of tax paid (in the form of a dealer bill of sale or tax receipt on DMV letterhead)

(5) Bill of Sale (unless you have a title in your name or signed over to you and not from a dealer)

(6) An odometer statement (if the mileage is not listed on the title or bill of sale and the vehicle is 2011 or newer)

(7) Business Documents (only if registering in your existing business name. We will need a copy of ALL member’s IDs and proof of social)

If you’ve already paid taxes, you’ll need to provide proof of tax paid. There are two ways to do that:

If you paid tax to a dealership, we provide a form that has to be signed by the dealer which can be emailed to them, we can accept copies of this form.

Or

If you paid taxes to the DMV, then we need an actual DMV receipt, NOT a receipt from a private tag agency.

Taxes

In the case you HAVE paid taxes but you can’t get the proof for some reason (the dealership doesn’t have the records on file or you don’t have a DMV receipt), you will have to pay the sales tax again based on the purchase price, unless it’s much lower then the NADA value.

If you HAVEN’T paid taxes, you’ll owe 4% sales tax based on the purchase price unless the NADA value (book value) is more than double your purchase price. Tax exemptions only apply in rare cases, as shown here.

NOTE: If your title is not already in your name and your purchase date is more then 30 days ago, there may be penalty fees owed to the DMV. We will notify you of the exact amount once we receive your order.

Moving on…

How to renew your vehicle

You’ll need to renew your South Dakota registration yearly. The month of renewal is based on the first letter of your last name or first letter of your business name.

But instead of calling the DMV every year and being on hold for hours, we can handle it for you.

All you need to do is sign up for our auto-renewal program. We’ll automatically renew your registration when it’s time so you won’t have to remember to do it either.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The soonest your registration can expire is 91 days. That probably sounds odd to you… so here’s an example:

If we register your vehicle on January 1st and your last name starts with “H,” your initial registration will expire at the end of May, but you can renew it as soon as February, and then it will be good until May of the next year.

As for how long this’ll take…

It’ll be 2-3 weeks to get your South Dakota registration and plates, and 5-10 weeks later you’ll get your salvage title.

Don’t forget about insurance!

Of course, you’ll have to get your vehicle insured for road use before you can drive it, however, we will not need proof of insurance from you.
