Nothing feels better than hitting the trails on your OHV.

Except possibly getting to the trails without having to use a trailer…

Which you’ll be able to do very soon.

And not only that…

You’ll also be riding it on the streets and taking it for a joyride on the highway if that’s what you like!

In a few minutes, we’ll be getting the paperwork ready for you and sent within 24 hours.

But first…

Before you order, here are some technicalities you’ll want to know about:

Dirt Bikes must meet the following specifications

  • Engine size over 119cc

  • Cannot be an electric bike

  • Cannot be a mini bike, pit bike, trials bike, or electric bike

If you do not meet these criteria, use our Montana Street Legal Service.

"How can I get an out-of-state registration without being a resident?"

Simple.

South Dakota doesn’t have in-state residency requirements to get registered. In other words, you don’t have to live in South Dakota or have an address there. You can drive in other states with the license plate and no one bats an eye – not even South Dakota.

Sales Tax

Sales tax is 4%. Tax exemptions only apply in rare cases, as shown here.

This is calculated using the vehicle purchase price or NADA Value, whichever is HIGHER.

Note: Dirt Legal will invoice you for tax if you owe it. You will not be auto-charged.

If you’ve already paid taxes, you’ll need to provide proof of tax paid. There are two ways to do that:

If you paid tax to a dealership, we provide a form that has to be signed by the dealer which can be emailed to them, we can accept copies of this form.

or

If you paid taxes to the DMV, then we need an actual DMV receipt, NOT a receipt from a private tag agency.

In the case you HAVE paid taxes but you can’t get the proof for some reason (the dealership doesn’t have the records on file or you don’t have a DMV receipt) and you ARE NOT financing, we can register your vehicle in Montana here so you don’t have to pay taxes again – cause that would suck.

Once we receive your documents, here’s the time frame you can expect:

2-3 weeks to get the license plate and registration, and another 6-7 weeks to receive the title.

3-8 weeks if financing (You won’t get a title until it’s paid off)

legal documents

Here are the documents to have ready

• ID/Passport/Drivers License (Copy)

• Social Sec. Card, 1099, W2, 1098, or Pay Stub copy (your full Social Security number must be displayed)

• Title/MCO with Bill of Sale, Transferable Registration, or just a Bill of Sale (if financing)

• Sales Tax or Proof of tax paid (in the form of a dealer bill of sale or DMV tax receipt)

Insurance Recommendations

Of course, you’ll have to get your dirt bike insured for road use before you can drive it, however we won’t need proof of insurance.

Parts You’ll Need

You’ll need to confirm the following parts are installed on your vehicle before driving it on the roads

  • White headlight with low and high beam

  • Red taillight with brighter or separate brake light

  • Reflector: yellow front and rear

  • white license plate light

  • Front and rear turn signals

  • DOT tires

  • Mirrors

  • Horn

  • Quiet exhaust with muffler

  • Spark arrestor (if you plan to use trails, OHV areas, etc.)

Renew Your Registration

You need to renew your registration each year, but we’ve made it super easy so you don't have to deal with the hassle of contacting the DMV and sitting on hold for hours.

All you need to do is sign up for our auto-renewal program. Once you’re enrolled, we’ll automatically process your renewal when it’s time for you to renew.

That means whether you’re busy or have more important things to worry about, your registration renewal will automatically show up at your doorstep right when you need it! Simple.

(we also have one-time registration renewal available).

Disclaimer

Street-legal is NOT for the faint of heart.

Just because you have a plate doesn’t mean you’ll have 0 risks riding in your town — unfortunately, the laws just aren't that clear.

You may still get pulled over.

That being said, getting hassled is still RARE. Some cops have just never seen an off-road vehicle driving with a plate. Usually, if you explain the statutes and how you got registered, they’ll let you go.

All we're saying is, take these risks into account before you get started. If getting pulled over scares you, stick to the trails. Getting street-legal isn’t for you.
