Please note: We will need a valid title to register your vehicle. If your title is not properly signed over to you or the LLC, we may need additional documentation.

What you’ll get:
You’ll get a Montana registration, title, & two license plates, and the vehicle will be owned by a Montana LLC, which in turn is owned by you. If you don’t live in a state that requires 2 plates, you can run the rear plates only, but it’s best to run both just to be safe.
We’ll set up your Montana LLC instantly after receiving your order. The LLC should get approved within 1 business day.
4-6 weeks to get your license plates and registration. Your title will arrive 6-8 weeks later.
As of February 2024, orders are taking up to 6 weeks due to the DMV being short-staffed, so we are providing a free 40-day temp tag shortly after sending your documents to the DMV for processing.
If you want a temp tag right away, you can purchase it by selecting "Yes, please send me a temp tag" when placing your order.
"How can I get an out-of-state registration without being a resident?"
Simple.
Montana allows you to register from anywhere, but only if you’re a resident of Montana. Therefore, we set you up with a Montana LLC and register your vehicle using your LLC as the owner instead of you. The LLC meets Montana’s residency requirement, and because the LLC is a resident of Montana, and you own the LLC, you can drive in other states with out-of-state plates.
For us to register your vehicle, we require one of the following:
A valid title in your name
A title that has been signed over to you
If the title was issued in Kentucky, Louisiana, Montana, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, or Pennsylvania, ensure that the seller has had the title notarized before sending it to us
A Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (MCO) from the dealership where you purchased the vehicle, accompanied by a bill of sale
Additionally, the title must not be labeled as 'junk' or 'salvage'. Rebuilt is okay.

How much did you pay for your vehicle?
If your vehicle has an MSRP of $150k or higher AND is 10 years old or newer, there’s an additional $825 registration fee due initially and paid every year until the vehicle is 11 years old.
The renewal fee for your Montana LLC is $125 per year and $70-$270 for the vehicle registration depending on your vehicle’s age.
LLC renewals are due by April 15th each year.
NOTE: If your vehicle is 11 years old or older, you’ll get a permanent plate and won’t have to renew the registration (If it’s a pickup truck over 1 ton, for example, 450/4500 series, it will NOT get a permanent plate). You’ll still have to renew the LLC.
Frequently Asked Questions about Montana LLCs

Your LLC is classified as an ASSET HOLDING LLC, not a REVENUE GENERATING LLC, therefore, no taxes will have to be filed.

You will want to get a policy in your name and your state with the LLC added as an additional interest. It will not be a commercial policy.

Once your Montana LLC is set you can continue to add vehicles to that same LLC. All you need to do is select "Yes" that you have an existing Montana LLC with Dirt Legal when you place your order here. The cost will be $300 lower than the regular price.

All you need to do is sign up for our auto-renewal program. We’ll automatically renew your LLC and registration when it’s time so you won’t have to worry about an expired registration.
NOTE: The LLC renewal and registration renewal are separate services.
Don’t forget about insurance!
You’ll have to get your vehicle insured for road use before you can drive it, but we won’t need proof to register it. To insure your vehicle, you’ll want a policy from your state, and you will simply add the LLC as an additional interest for no extra cost.

After you add a 40-day temp tag to your order, it will be emailed to you within 2-4 business days so that you can start driving right away while we work on registering your vehicle with the DMV.
All you’ll need to do is print and laminate the tag, attach to your vehicle, and you’re ready to ride.

Personalized Plate
When you add a personalized plate to your order, we’ll automatically email an online form to complete so you can customize the characters on your license plate.
Once your order is processed by the DMV, you'll receive a 40-day temp tag (at no additional cost) until your custom plate arrives.
